In the context of the WFD, the assessment of the coastal water bodies and transition is required from different biological parameters including opportunistic macroalgae. This implies on the one hand the development of appropriate methods and the other hand controlling that the environmental quality is established in connection with an identified pressure. This assessment is currently based on monitoring of opportunistic green macroalgae. Nevertheless, massive developments of other algae, including Pylaiella littoralis and Gracilaria sp. may be involved in some water bodies. In their work, Sigovini et al. (2013) compare several methods of calculating M-AMBI and alternative indices with the values of M-AMBI.
